Word Cloud For Trailer

We added all the words to a word cloud. These words are relevant to our film, and enabled us to come up with possible ideas for our trailer. As the image shows, the idea of steam-punk and murder mystery in the Victorian era is a common theme and the genre we have decided upon for our trailer.

Word Pitch

"A Steam-Punk inspired retelling of a Victorian Thriller, full of crime and horror"

What is a Trailer? 5: The Iron Lady

Trailer 5: The Iron Lady (Teaser)

Length: 1.10

GenreBiographical

Production Companies: Universal Pictures

Overview: The teaser trailer for the Iron Lady is of two unknown suited men talking with an unknown figure offering to mould them into a figure worthy of being prime minister offering criticisms with suspensive music playing. A renounced female voice is then heard. This is similar voice to that of Margeret Thatcher which coincides with a change of beat in the music. The woman is then revealed to be Thatcher concluding on how she will speak in public.

Effectiveness: This trailer an effective as a teaser trailer as the camera positioning in this teaser prevents the audience from knowing who the two gentlemen are speaking too meaning the audience will try to guess who it is about. When the camera finally reveals Thatcher it is clear that the film revolves around her journey to becoming prime-minister. The trailer also sets the tone of the film and questions how Thatchers journey in the feature film will unfold.

What is a Trailer? 4: Schlinder's List

Trailer 4: Schindler's List

Length: 2:16

Genre: Historical Drama

Production Company: Universal Studio's

Overview: The trailer for Schindler's list is a unique trailer in comparison to the other film trailers analysed. It is the only trailer in which the footage is entirely monochrome and the one dialogue heard in the trailer is "goodbye jew" from a young girl. The content of the trailer is very graphic with forced kidnappings and graphic images suggesting ransacking and violence. The mise-en scene of the figures in the trailer suggest the story revolves around the Holocaust and Oskar Schindler employing Jews who would otherwise have been sent to concentration camps. The forced labour juxtaposes the graphic scenes of burning, terrible working conditions and possible imagery of gas murder.

Effectiveness: The imagery of the trailer is very powerful and invokes an emotional response due to the graphic images seen and the public reaction to the Nazi regime and the Holocaust in general. The use of "goodbye jew" as the only dialogue in the trailer shows that the prosecution of Jews is a key theme in the film. The use of monochrome as the default camera filter also adds realism to the trailer as it gives the presentation of films from the time period between 1939-1945 and it does not allow you to determine the colour of skin or who has visible evidence of emotion giving an apathetic feel.

What is a Trailer? 3: The Terminal

Trailer 3: The Terminal

Length: 2.28

Genre: Comedy Drama

Production Companies: Dreamworks

Overview: The Trailer for The Terminal explains the story of the film revolving around Viktor Navorski who is forced to live in JFK airport in New York due to his passport no longer being valid whilst he was flying to New York. The trailer does not have narration but instead uses titles which are made from a Flight information display system to tie in with the setting of an airport. The trailer is heavily focused on comedic situations that Navorski is in, the anger of Customs and Border Protection and a love interest in another character portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Effectiveness: The trailer for The Terminal is cleverly done with it's integration of text with the FIDS in displaying a summary of the films story and the footage and shots contained show how Navorski ends up in his predicament and teases how the main plot and sub-plots will develop. As the genre is a Comedy-Drama the majority of the content is intended to be humorous such as Navorski shaving in a public toilet and attempting to flirt with a member of security. The general  theme of this trailer is positive likely due to genre and has a lesser serious tone then The Hobbit and The Damned United and the musical score of the trailer is fast paced and light.

What is a Trailer? 2: The Damned United

Trailer 2: The Damned United

Length: 2:05

Genre: Sport Drama

Production Companies: BBC Films, Sony Pictures Classic

Overview: The trailer for The Damned United establishes the plot of the film is set in 1973 and that Don Revie (who is featured heavily in the trailer) is considered the best manager in the country and Brian Clough is considered the unknown wishing to usurp him. The Dialogue suggests that Clough is a rebel in the footballing world. The titles further support this aim to change the footballing ways of Leeds United despite his isolation from his squad and the lack of support from the board at Leeds United.

Effectiveness: In terms of establishing to the viewers the rivalry between Revie and Clough, the trailer is successful in showing this as the character narrative andf narration from the narrator verbalises Clough's rivalry with Revie and his ambition to be a better manager at Leeds United. The trailer also establishes that Clough's personal relations with Peter Taylor are an integral part of the story. Due to the genre difference from the other films, The Damned United features archival footage of football in 1972-73 in particular footage of unprofessional challenges made by Revie's Leeds United against Clough's Derby County

What is a Trailer? 1: The Hobbit

Trailer 1: The Hobbit An Unexpected Trailer

Length: 2:32

Genre: Fantasy
Production Companies: Warner Bro's, Newline Cinema. Metro Goldwyn Mayer

Overview: The trailer for "The Hobbit" establishes that the story of the film will revolve around Bilbo Baggins and a "adventure" which will lead him away from a hectic lifestyle in the company of Gandalf and 12 dwarves. This is gathered from the dialogue of the trailer and how the majority of the focus in terms of cinematography is centred around the character. As the film is of the fantasy genre, the trailer shows establishing shots of visually pleasing locations which due to to sharp detail and lighting look out of this world.

Effectiveness: The trailer has many references to the original Lord of the Rings Trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. Locations, Characters and Props which are associated with Lord of The Rings are predominately in focus when in shot e.g. the one ring is in focus in the climax of the trailer which signifies it's significance. Whilst this will be picked up by those who have watched the previous three films those who are unaware of these signs will find the trailer confusing however the traditional elements of fantasy films such as action and awesome imagery makes it an appealing trailer.
