Trailer 4: Schindler's List
Length: 2:16
Genre: Historical Drama
Production Company: Universal Studio's
Overview: The trailer for Schindler's list is a unique trailer in comparison to the other film trailers analysed. It is the only trailer in which the footage is entirely monochrome and the one dialogue heard in the trailer is "goodbye jew" from a young girl. The content of the trailer is very graphic with forced kidnappings and graphic images suggesting ransacking and violence. The mise-en scene of the figures in the trailer suggest the story revolves around the Holocaust and Oskar Schindler employing Jews who would otherwise have been sent to concentration camps. The forced labour juxtaposes the graphic scenes of burning, terrible working conditions and possible imagery of gas murder.
Effectiveness: The imagery of the trailer is very powerful and invokes an emotional response due to the graphic images seen and the public reaction to the Nazi regime and the Holocaust in general. The use of "goodbye jew" as the only dialogue in the trailer shows that the prosecution of Jews is a key theme in the film. The use of monochrome as the default camera filter also adds realism to the trailer as it gives the presentation of films from the time period between 1939-1945 and it does not allow you to determine the colour of skin or who has visible evidence of emotion giving an apathetic feel.
